A Checkup for Your Glucose Testing Devices

With the change of weather seasons ahead, it is a good time to schedule your routine physician visits and medical tests. It is also a great time to examine and check the glucose testing products you use.

Glucose Monitors:
If your glucose monitor is 5 years old it is time to replace it. Meter technologies have changed and new model monitors need less blood, test faster and store more test results. Insurances will usually cover the cost of replacing a 5 year old monitor.

If your monitor is less than 5 years old:
Replace the batteries. Fresh batteries guarantee there will not be any
interruption in testing.
Check your meter and test strips by using a glucose control. This is
a simple process where you do a test using control solution instead
of blood. If the result is within range, your meter and strips are
functioning correctly. Please call us to receive control solution.

Lancets & Lancing Devices:
Use a new lancet every time you test your blood glucose. This helps
provide an adequate sample and makes sticking yourself less
painful. If you have been using your lancing device for 6 months
replace it. The springs wear and erratic lancet travel within the
lancing device can cause discomfort. Call DHS and we will be
happy to take your order for a lancing device.

Testing Frequency & Records:
Be sure to follow your doctor’s recommendation on how many times per day you are supposed to test. This is vital to your treatment. Keep records of all your test results & take them with you when you see the doctor. Medicare and many other insurances are now requiring that you keep a log of your test results and that you have reviewed them with your doctor. Medicare often requires us to ask your doctor for medical justification for your testing frequency as well as proof of how often you actually test.

Time for a checkup?

Many insurances, including Medicare, now mandate that you see your diabetes physician a minimum of every six months in order for them to cover your glucose testing supplies.

The American Diabetes Association recommends that you have the following done on a routine basis:

Hemoglobin A1c. This checks average glucose levels for the past 3 months.
Microalbuminuria test for kidney function.
Cholesterol profile for measuring risk of heart disease. Should include a Total Cholesterol, LDL, HDL and Triglycerides.
Blood pressure check.
Foot exam. Ask your doctor to check during each visit. Routinely check your soles and toes at home.
Eye exams. Have an eye exam at least once per year.
Dental exams. Have them done twice per year.

Take care of yourself; have these tests done routinely. Be sure to ask for a written record of the results. Ask questions so that you are well informed.
